John Addey (born 1550 – died 16 April 1606) was an important shipwright in England. A shipwright is someone who designs and builds ships. John Addey worked at the Deptford Dockyard, which was a very busy place for shipbuilding back then.
John Addey's Generosity
John Addey is remembered for his kindness and for helping people in his town. When he died, he left £200 to help the poor people of Deptford. This was a lot of money in the 1600s!
How His Gift Helped
His gift was used wisely. The money was invested in land on Church Street in Deptford. The rent from this land created a steady income. This income was then used to support a school for children in Deptford. John Addey's will also mentioned the Shipwrights Hall in London, showing his connection to his trade.
The Addey School
The first Addey School building was built in 1821. Later, in 1862, it was made even bigger to teach more children. Over time, this school joined with another school called Dean George Stanhope's School. Together, they formed the Addey and Stanhope School. This new school moved to New Cross Road in 1899, where it still helps students today.
Remembering John Addey
John Addey was buried at St Nicholas Church in Deptford. You can find special plaques on the outside north wall of the church that remember him and his good deeds. These plaques tell the story of how his gift helped many people in Deptford for a very long time.
