After finishing his studies, he started teaching and doing research. From 1983, he worked at the University of Durham. He began as a lecturer and later became a senior lecturer in the psychology department.

Since 1994, John Aggleton has been a professor at Cardiff University. Here, he teaches and researches cognitive neuroscience. He focuses on understanding how the brain is built. He also studies how different parts of the brain work together to create various types of memory.
