Keeping the Peace in Cumbria
From 1554 to 1569, John Aglionby served as a Justice of the Peace for Cumbria. This role was like being a local judge and police officer combined. He helped make sure laws were followed and kept the peace in his community. He also worked as a coroner in 1556 and 1575. A coroner's job was to investigate deaths, especially if they were sudden or unusual.
Serving in Parliament
John Aglionby became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Carlisle in October 1553. As an MP, he represented the people of Carlisle in the English Parliament, which is where new laws were discussed and made. This was during the reign of Queen Mary I. In Parliament, he supported new ideas about religion, which were known as Protestant reforms at the time. He might have also been an MP for Carlisle in 1559, during the first Parliament of Queen Elizabeth I.
