Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Allenson (born around 1558) was an English puritan leader and scholar. He was known for his strong religious beliefs and for helping to publish the works of his teacher, Dr. William Whitaker.

John Allenson was born in Durham. He started studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1576. Later that year, he moved to St. John's College. There, he earned a scholarship and became a student of Dr. William Whitaker. Allenson followed Dr. Whitaker's religious ideas. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in 1579–80, his Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1583, and his Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) in 1590.

In 1583, Allenson was stopped from working as a minister in Barnwell. This happened because he would not agree to certain church rules. On March 20, 1583–84, he was chosen as a fellow at St. John's College. A fellow is like a senior member of the college. In 1589, he was again stopped from being a minister in Horningsea, Cambridgeshire. However, he kept on preaching. He held important jobs at his college, including senior dean and sacrist in 1602–3, and senior bursar in 1603–4. These roles involved managing college affairs and finances.

Allenson's Published Works

John Allenson helped publish several books by his former teacher, Dr. Whitaker. He edited Prælectiones (1599), Prælectiones, in quibus tractatur controversia de conciliis contra pontificios, imprimis Rob. Bellarminum (1600), and De Peccato Originali contra Stapletonum (1600). It seems Allenson took notes during Whitaker's lectures and prepared them to be printed as books.

In 1624, another scholar named John Ward published more of Whitaker's lectures in Frankfort. Ward explained that Whitaker had not published these lectures himself. Instead, Allenson had carefully written down Whitaker's words during his lectures. After Whitaker passed away, Allenson worked to get these notes ready for printing. However, Allenson also passed away before they could be published. The notes then came into John Ward's hands, who finally published them.
