John Archambault grew up in Pasadena, California. From the time he was in third grade, he knew he wanted to be a writer. He remembers reading Charlotte's Web, a classic children's book by E.B. White. After reading it, he told his teacher he wanted to write. She wisely told him that to be a writer, he first had to be a reader.

Archambault started his professional writing journey in tenth grade. He took a part-time job at his local newspaper. He kept gaining experience there throughout his high school years.

For college, John Archambault studied writing and journalism. He attended the University of California, Riverside. There, he was the editor of the campus newspaper, The Highlander. This role helped him grow his love for writing even more.

During his graduate studies, Archambault met Bill Martin, Jr.. Martin was already a well-known children's writer and educator. Their first book together, The Ghost-Eye Tree, came out in 1988. Archambault also went to Columbia Teacher's College. He earned his teaching certificate there.
