John Arrowsmith (born March 29, 1602 – died February 15, 1659) was an important English thinker and teacher. He was known for his ideas about religion and his work at famous universities.

John Arrowsmith's Life

Early Years and Education

John Arrowsmith was born near a place called Gateshead in England. When he was about 14 years old, in 1616, he started studying at St John's College at the University of Cambridge. This was a big step for his education!

In 1623, he became a "fellow" at St Catharine Hall, which is another part of Cambridge University. Being a fellow meant he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching and research.

A Preacher and Parliament Member

In 1631, John Arrowsmith became a preacher in a town called King's Lynn in Norfolk. This meant he gave sermons and taught about religious topics.

He was also a member of the Westminster Assembly. This was a group of important religious leaders who met in London during the 1640s. They helped to shape the future of the church in England. John Arrowsmith even gave speeches to the Long Parliament, which was the main government body at the time.

Leading Universities

John Arrowsmith was chosen to be the "Master" of St John's College, Cambridge, on April 11, 1644. The Master is like the head or principal of the college.

In 1645, he also became the rector of St Martin Pomary, a church in London. A rector is the leader of a church parish.

From 1647 to 1648, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. This was a very important job, as the Vice-Chancellor is a senior leader who helps manage the entire university.

In 1651, he was chosen as the "Regius Professor of Divinity." This was a special teaching position at the university, focusing on religious studies. Then, in 1653, he became the Master of Trinity College. Trinity College is one of the most famous colleges at Cambridge.

He stopped being a professor in 1655. John Arrowsmith passed away on February 15, 1659, in Cambridge.
