John Arthur Wynne (born 20 April 1801 – died 19 June 1865) was an important Irish landowner and politician. He was also a member of the Privy Council, which was a group of trusted advisors to the monarch.

Early Life and Education

John Arthur Wynne was the oldest son of Owen Wynne. His family lived at Hazelwood House, Sligo, in Ireland. John went to school at Winchester School from 1816 to 1819. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford starting in 1820.

Becoming a Landowner

In 1841, John Arthur Wynne's father passed away. John then inherited the family home, Hazelwood House, Sligo. This made him a significant landowner in the area. He was also chosen to be the High Sheriff of Sligo for the years 1840 to 1841. The High Sheriff was a very important official in the county.

Political Career

John Arthur Wynne was a member of the Conservative Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sligo. An MP is someone who represents their local area in the country's parliament. He was first elected in 1830. He was elected again in 1856. He stopped being an MP in 1860 by taking on a special role called Steward of the Manor of Northstead. In 1852, he was also made an Irish Privy Counsellor. This meant he was a special advisor to the government.

Family Life

John Arthur Wynne married Lady Anne Wandesford Butler. She was the daughter of James Butler, 1st Marquess of Ormonde. They had two sons and two daughters. Sadly, one of their sons died before John did. When John Arthur Wynne passed away in 1865, his son Owen (born 1843 – died 1910) took over the family estate. John Arthur Wynne died while visiting Tuam in 1865.
