The John Baeten Store is a historic building located in De Pere, Wisconsin. It was once a busy grocery store and home. Today, it is recognized as an important part of the area's history.
A Look Back: The John Baeten Store's Story
John Baeten opened his store in 1903. He sold groceries and other useful items. John also lived in an apartment upstairs on the second floor. His business did very well! So, in 1914, he added more space to the building.
In 1917, John's sons, Albert and Peter, took over the store. Their brother-in-law, Ferdinand Van Dyck, also joined them. The Baeten family owned and ran the store for many years. They kept the business going until the 1970s.
A Historic Landmark
In more recent times, the first floor of the building has been used by different businesses. The second floor still has apartments where people live.
Because of its history, the building was listed on the State Register of Historic Places in 2013. The next year, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special building that is important to our country's past.
