John Botetourt, 1st Baron Botetourt (died 1324) was an important English military leader and admiral. He lived during the late 1200s and early 1300s. He was known for his work leading soldiers and ships for the King of England.

Family Life

John Botetourt married a woman named Matilda fitz Thomas. Her parents were Sir Thomas fitz Otes and Beatrice de Beauchamp.

John Botetourt's Career

John Botetourt had a very busy career serving the King.

Early Roles and Naval Service

In 1291, he became the Governor of St Briavels Castle. This was an important job, as castles were key to defending the country. Between 1294 and 1297, he was made the Admiral of the North. This meant he was in charge of the northern fleet of England's navy. In 1295, he led an attack and burned the town of Cherbourg in France.

Becoming a Baron and Solving Problems

On July 13, 1305, he was given the title of 1st Lord Botetourt. This made him a powerful noble. In 1304, he was asked by the King to help settle a big argument. This was between the leaders and citizens of Bristol and a noble family, Lord Thomas of Berkeley and his son Maurice. He also served as the warden of the Forest of Dean, which meant he looked after this important forest area.

Fighting for the King

John Botetourt fought in many battles and campaigns for King Edward I. He went on expeditions to Gascony (a region in France) and Scotland. He also played a part in the Wars of Scottish Independence, which were long conflicts between England and Scotland.

He was called to attend Parliament, which is like a government meeting, from 1305 until he died in 1324.

Later Life and Challenges

In 1313, John Botetourt was involved in some political disagreements. He worked with other nobles to make peace with the King. In 1314, he was appointed the Governor of Framlingham Castle. The next year, in 1315, he was again made the Admiral for the Northern Seas.

In 1322, John Botetourt took part in the Battle of Boroughbridge. He fought on the side of rebels led by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. After the rebellion failed, he was fined a large sum of money, £1,000. However, he was pardoned, or forgiven, on October 8, 1322.

John Botetourt passed away on November 25, 1324. His son, Thomas, had died before him. So, his grandson, also named John, became the next Baron Botetourt.
