Sir John Bourchier (c. 1438 – 1495) was an important English knight and nobleman who lived in the 1400s. He helped manage a large area of land known as the Honour of Richmond. Sir John was involved in a major historical event, the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, where he fought to support King Richard III.

His Family Background

Sir John Bourchier was born into a very important family. He was the fourth son of Henry Bourchier, 1st Earl of Essex, a powerful noble, and his wife, Isabel of Cambridge, Countess of Essex.

His Marriages

Sir John Bourchier was married twice.

  • First Marriage: Before May 2, 1462, he married Lady Elizabeth Grey. She was a very wealthy lady who had inherited a special title, Baroness Ferrers of Groby, from her grandfather. When Sir John married Lady Elizabeth, he also gained the title of Baron Ferrers of Groby because of her. They did not have any children together.
  • Second Marriage: After Lady Elizabeth passed away, Sir John married again. His second wife was Elizabeth Chichele, and they were married before July 6, 1490.

The Battle of Bosworth

In 1485, Sir John Bourchier took part in the famous Battle of Bosworth. This battle was a key moment in English history, as it marked the end of the Wars of the Roses and the start of the Tudor dynasty. Sir John fought on the side of King Richard III, who was defeated in the battle.

Later Life and Burial

Sir John Bourchier passed away in 1495. In his will, which he wrote on June 4, 1495, he asked to be buried in Bilegh Abbey in Essex. He wanted his tomb to be placed right next to his parents' tombs.
