John Bowton (also spelled John Bouton or John Boughton) was an important person in the early history of Connecticut. Born in October 1636, he was one of the first people to settle and help build the town of Norwalk. He also served as a representative, called a "deputy," in the government of the Connecticut Colony.

Who Was John Bowton?

John Bowton was born in Hartford, which was part of the Connecticut Colony at the time. His parents were John Bouton and Alice Kellogg Bouton. In 1657, he married Abigail Marvin. They had eight children together: John, Matthew, Hannah, Joseph, Rachel, Abigail, Mary, and Elizabeth.

A Founding Settler

John Bowton became one of the original "founding settlers" of Norwalk. This means he was among the first people to establish and build the town. These early settlers worked hard to create new communities in what was then a wilderness. They cleared land, built homes, and set up local governments.

Serving the Colony

John Bowton played a role in the government of the Connecticut Colony. He served as a "deputy" in the Connecticut General Assembly. Think of a deputy as a representative, similar to how people in Congress or a state legislature represent their towns today.

His Role as Deputy

As a deputy, John Bowton helped make decisions for the entire colony. He represented the town of Norwalk in many sessions of the General Assembly. These sessions took place over several years, from October 1671 to October 1685. This shows he was trusted by the people of Norwalk to speak for them.

John Bowton's Legacy

John Bowton passed away in January 1707 in Norwalk. He is buried in the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery. His name is honored on the Founders Stone there. This stone lists the names of the brave individuals who first settled Norwalk. It reminds us of their important contributions to the town's history.
