Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Bromley (born around 1682 – died 20 October 1718) lived at Horseheath Hall in Cambridgeshire, England. He was a wealthy landowner in both England and Barbados. He was also a Tory politician who served in the British House of Commons from 1707 until his death in 1718.

Early Life and Family

John Bromley was born in Barbados. His father, also named John Bromley, was a very successful sugar farmer. His mother was Dorothy White. John Bromley went to Clare College, Cambridge in 1700.

On 10 August 1704, he married Mercy Bromley. For a year, from 1704 to 1705, he held an important local role as the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. This job involved keeping law and order in the area. In 1707, he inherited his father's lands in Cambridgeshire and Barbados.

Becoming a Politician

John Bromley became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cambridgeshire in December 1707. He took over the seat from his father without anyone running against him. He was re-elected in 1708, again without opposition.

In Parliament, he always voted with the Tories. The Tories were one of the two main political groups at the time. Even though some local Whigs (the other main political group) had influence over him, he remained a strong Tory.

In 1710, he voted against a major political trial involving Dr. Sacheverell. Because of this, he faced a challenge in the next election, but he still won the most votes. He was known as a strong Tory and helped to show problems with the previous government. He was also part of a political group called the October Club. He was re-elected without opposition in 1713 and won another election in 1715. He continued to serve as an MP until he passed away.

Later Life

John Bromley died at Horseheath Hall on 20 October 1718, when he was 36 years old. He was buried at the local church in Horseheath. He and his wife, Mercy, had one son named Henry. Henry later became the 1st Baron Montfort. In his will, John Bromley asked that the building work at Horseheath estate be finished according to his plans.
