John Campbell, 3rd of Cawdor facts for kids
Sir John Campbell was an important Scottish nobleman and a knight. He lived from about 1576 to 1642. His father was Archibald Campbell, and his mother was Isabella Grant. Isabella was the daughter of James Grant, who was the laird of Freuchie.
Buying Land in Scotland
Sir John Campbell of Cawdor bought a lot of land in Scotland. In 1612, he bought lands on the island of Islay from Angus MacDonald. These lands had belonged to the MacDonald clan. Sir John paid 6,000 merks for them, which was a large sum of money.
Later, in 1615, he bought more land. This time, he purchased areas on Islay and the island of Jura. These lands had previously belonged to the Maclean clan of Duart.
Castle Conflicts
After Sir John bought the land on Islay, some young leaders from the MacDonald clan were not happy. They took over two castles: Dunyvaig Castle and Loch Gorm Castle. They did this to show they did not accept Sir John Campbell's ownership.
Sir John Campbell fought to get the castles back. His forces successfully took back Dunyvaig Castle. Loch Gorm Castle later gave up on January 28, 1615. This meant Sir John gained control of both castles.
