John Carey, 2nd Earl of Dover (born 1608 – died 26 May 1677) was an important English nobleman. From 1628 to 1666, he was known as Viscount Rochford. He was the oldest son of Henry Carey, 1st Earl of Dover, and Judith Pelham. John Carey studied at St John's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.

John Carey was born in 1608. His father, Henry Carey, was the first Earl of Dover. John grew up in a noble family. He received a good education for his time. He attended St John's College, Cambridge, which helped him prepare for his future role in society.
His Role in Parliament
In 1640, John Carey became a member of the House of Lords. This is part of the English Parliament, where important laws are made. He was called to the House of Lords as Baron Hunsdon. This happened through a special process called a "writ of acceleration." This meant he took on one of his father's lesser titles while his father was still alive.
When his father passed away in 1666, John Carey became the Earl of Dover. This was his main title. However, when John Carey died in 1677, the title of Earl of Dover ended because he had no sons to inherit it. A distant cousin, Robert, inherited the title of Baron Hunsdon instead.
His Family Life
John Carey was married twice. His first marriage was on 9 May 1628, to Dorothy St. John. She was the daughter of Oliver St John, 1st Earl of Bolingbroke. Sadly, Dorothy passed away shortly after their marriage, in June 1628. They did not have any children together.
He married a second time on 2 December 1630. His second wife was Abigail Cokayne. She was the daughter of Sir William Cockayne. John and Abigail had two daughters:
- Mary Carey (1631–1696), who married William Heveningham.
- Abigail Carey (born 1633), who died when she was young.
