John Douglas Carnegie served in the military during World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918. He was a Captain, and temporarily a Major, in the 95th (Hants Yeomanry) Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He was even mentioned in official reports for his bravery.
In 1963, John inherited the title of Earl of Northesk. He received this title from his first cousin, David Carnegie, who was the 11th Earl of Northesk. His cousin had passed away without any children, so the title passed to John.
