John Carnegie (Jacobite) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Carnegie was a Scottish lawyer and politician who lived from around 1679 or 1680 until May 1750. He came from a place called Boysack in Angus, Scotland. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the British House of Commons in 1708. He stayed in this important role until 1716, when he was removed because he supported the Jacobite rising.

Early Life and Education

John Carnegie was the oldest son of John Carnegie of Boysack and his wife, Jean Fotheringham. His mother's father, David Fotheringham, was a "Shire Commissioner" in the old Parliament of Scotland. This meant he was a representative for his local area.

Young John Carnegie inherited his father's land by 1683. He went to Marischal College from 1696 to 1698. Then, in 1700, when he was about 20 years old, he studied at the University of Leyden. In 1703, he became a lawyer, which is called an "advocate" in Scotland. He married Margaret Skene on November 6, 1707.

Political Career

John Carnegie began his political journey in 1708. He was chosen as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Forfar. This was a big deal because he was the first person from that area to represent them in the House of Commons of Great Britain. The House of Commons is a very important part of the British government where laws are made.

He was re-elected as MP for Forfar in 1710 and again in 1713. In 1714, he was given another important job: Solicitor General for Scotland. This is a high-ranking legal position in the government. However, he only held this job for about six months.

The Jacobite Rising and Expulsion

In 1715, John Carnegie was elected as an MP for Forfar once more. However, he soon became involved in the Jacobite rising of 1715. This was a time when some people in Britain wanted to bring back the old royal family (the Stuarts) to the throne. Because John Carnegie supported this movement, he was removed from the House of Commons in 1716. Being "expelled" means he was officially kicked out of his position as an MP.

Later Life

John Carnegie passed away by May 14, 1750. He had two sons, and his older son inherited his family's estate.
