John Cartwright (who was active as an artist from about 1763 until 1808, and passed away in 1811) was an English painter. He created many different kinds of art during his life.

John Cartwright's Art Journey

John Cartwright was part of a group called the Free Society of Artists. In 1763, he officially joined this society. He traveled to Rome, Italy, to study art and improve his skills. While there, he met another famous artist named Henry Fuseli.

When John Cartwright came back to England, he lived at 100 St. Martin's Lane for several years. In 1779, Henry Fuseli also returned from Rome and shared a part of Cartwright's house for a while. They became very good friends. Fuseli often gave Cartwright helpful tips and even assisted him with his artwork. You can see Fuseli's style in many of Cartwright's historical paintings.

John Cartwright showed his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1784 to 1808. He painted a wide variety of subjects. His art included beautiful landscapes, scenes from history, pictures of everyday life, and most importantly, many portraits of people.
