Sir John Champneys (1495–1556) was an important person in London during the time of King Henry VIII. He served as a Sheriff of London in 1522 and later became the Lord Mayor of London in 1534. When he became Lord Mayor, he was also made a knight.

Sir John Champneys was a successful merchant. This means he bought and sold goods to make a living. He was a member of the Worshipful Company of Skinners, which was a powerful group (or guild) of merchants who dealt with animal skins and furs.

His Life and Work

Sir John Champneys was born in 1495. His father was Robert Champneys, from a place called Chew Magna in Somerset, England.

One of his big projects was starting the building of Hall Place in Bexley around 1537. This was a grand house that still stands today.

A writer from his time, John Stow, wrote about Sir John. He mentioned that Sir John built a tall brick tower on his house in London. This tower was one of the first of its kind on a private home in the city.

His Family

Sir John Champneys was married twice. His first wife was Margaret Murfyn. She had been married before to Roger Hall. Margaret passed away by 1515.

His second wife was Merial Barret. They had three sons together:

  • Justinian

Merial passed away in 1534.

Later Years and Death

Sir John Champneys lived until 1556. He died on October 3rd of that year. He was buried a few days later, on October 8th, at a church called St Mary the Virgin in Bexley, England.
