John Cochrane, 2nd Earl of Dundonald (born around 1660 – died May 16, 1690) was an important Scottish nobleman. Before he became an Earl, people called him Lord Cochrane from 1679 to 1686.
Early Life and Family
John Cochrane was the oldest son of William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane, and Lady Katherine Kennedy. His grandfather was William Cochrane, 1st Earl of Dundonald. John also studied at the University of Glasgow.
Becoming an Earl
When John's father passed away in 1679, John became known as Lord Cochrane. Later, in 1685, his grandfather died. Because John's father had passed away earlier, John inherited the title of Earl of Dundonald.
John supported William of Orange. William later became the King of England, Ireland, and Scotland in 1689.
Family Life
In November 1684, John Cochrane married Lady Susan Hamilton. She was the daughter of William Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton and Anne Hamilton, who was the Duchess of Hamilton in her own right.
John and Susan had three children:
- Lady Anne Cochrane (born 1685), who passed away when she was young.
- William Cochrane, 3rd Earl of Dundonald (1686–1705). He never married.
- John Cochrane, 4th Earl of Dundonald (1687–1720). He married Lady Anne Murray in 1706. After she died in 1710, he married Lady Mary Somerset in 1715.
Lord Dundonald passed away on May 16, 1690. He was buried on May 29, 1690, at Dundonald Church. His oldest son, William, inherited his titles. However, William died unmarried in 1705. So, John's second son, John, then became the Earl. After Lord Dundonald's death, his wife, Lady Susan, married Charles Hay, 3rd Marquess of Tweeddale.
