John Cochrane, the 4th Earl of Dundonald, was an important Scottish nobleman and politician. He was born on July 4, 1687, and passed away on June 5, 1720.
Early Life of John Cochrane
John Cochrane was born on July 4, 1687. He was the second son of John Cochrane, 2nd Earl of Dundonald and Lady Susan Hamilton. His older brother, William Cochrane, was the 3rd Earl of Dundonald. William never married.
John's grandparents on his father's side were William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane, and Lady Katherine Kennedy. His grandparents on his mother's side were William Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton and Anne Hamilton, who was the Duchess of Hamilton in her own right.
John started studying at the University of Glasgow when he was 14 years old.
Political and Military Career
John Cochrane became the 4th Earl of Dundonald. He took part in an election for Scottish representatives in 1807. However, his votes were not counted because he was still a minor, meaning he was too young to legally vote.
Lord Dundonald served as a Representative Peer for Scotland. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland in the British Parliament. He held this position from 1713 to 1714. He was also a Colonel in the 4th Royal Horse Guards, a military unit, from 1715 to 1719.
Family and Personal Life
Lord Dundonald married Lady Anne Murray on April 4, 1706. Lady Anne was the daughter of Charles Murray, 1st Earl of Dunmore. Lady Anne passed away on November 30, 1710, due to smallpox.
Before her death, John and Anne had four children:
- Lady Anne Cochrane (born around 1706, died 1724): She married James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton.
- William Cochrane, 5th Earl of Dundonald (1708–1725): He became the 5th Earl after his father. He never married.
- Lady Susan Cochrane (died 1754): She married Charles Lyon, 6th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. After he died, she married George Forbes.
- Lady Catherine Cochrane (died 1786): She married her cousin, Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway.
After his first wife died, Lord Dundonald married Mary Somerset on October 15, 1715. Mary was the widow of Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort. She was the youngest daughter of Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds.
Lord Dundonald passed away on June 5, 1720, when he was almost 33 years old. His only son, William, inherited his titles and became the 5th Earl of Dundonald. His second wife, Mary, passed away in Scotland around 1721.
