Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds (born 1659 – died 25 June 1729) was an important English politician and a high-ranking officer in the Royal Navy. He held several titles during his life, including Viscount Osborne, Earl of Danby, and Marquess of Carmarthen, before becoming the 2nd Duke of Leeds in 1712. He was a member of the Tory Party, a political group in England.

Early Life and Family

Peregrine Osborne was born in 1659. He was the second son of Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds, who was a very influential person. His mother was Bridget, the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Lindsey.

In 1673, Peregrine's father received the title of Viscount Osborne. However, he soon gave this title to Peregrine. This happened when his father was given a new, higher title called Viscount Latimer.

Political Career

Peregrine Osborne began his political journey in the Parliament of England. In 1677, he became a Member of Parliament for the area of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Later, in 1679, he briefly represented Corfe Castle.

In 1689, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for York. He served in this role for about a year. After that, he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. This happened when he was given his father's title of Baron Osborne.

Naval Career

Even though he was in the House of Lords, Peregrine Osborne decided to focus on a career in the Royal Navy. He became a captain in the navy on January 2, 1691. He quickly rose through the ranks.

By July 7, 1693, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral. He took part in several important naval actions, including an attack on Brest in 1694. He was also interested in designing warships. He even worked with Peter the Great, the Russian Tsar, during his visit to London in 1698.

Peregrine Osborne helped design a ship called the Peregrine Galley. This ship was launched in 1700. He continued to advance in the navy, becoming a Vice Admiral in 1702. By December 21, 1708, he had reached the rank of full Admiral.

Family Life

On April 25, 1682, Peregrine Osborne married Bridget Hyde. She was the only daughter of Sir Thomas Hyde, 2nd Baronet. Together, they had four children:

  • William Henry Osborne (1690–1711)
  • Peregrine Hyde Osborne (1691–1731), who later became the 3rd Duke of Leeds.
  • Lady Mary Osborne (1688–1722), who married Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort. After he passed away, she married John Cochrane, 4th Earl of Dundonald.
  • Lady Bridget Osborne, who married Rev. William Williams.

Peregrine Osborne became the 2nd Duke of Leeds in 1712, after his father passed away. When he died in 1729, his second son, Peregrine, inherited his titles and became the 3rd Duke of Leeds. He was buried in the family chapel at All Hallows Church in Harthill, Yorkshire.
