James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton and 2nd Duke of Brandon was an important Scottish nobleman. He was born on January 5, 1703, and passed away on March 2, 1743. James was the son of the 4th Duke of Hamilton.
Early Life and Education
James Hamilton started his education at Winchester College. He studied there from 1716 to 1717. After that, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university. He joined Christ Church in May 1718. In June 1719, he earned a special degree called a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL).
Becoming the Duke
James became the Duke of Hamilton in 1712. He was only nine years old at the time. He inherited this important title after his father passed away. His father, the 4th Duke, died in Hyde Park.
Helping Others
James Hamilton cared about helping people. He was involved in starting a famous charity in London. This charity was called the Foundling Hospital. It was created to help children in need. James was one of the very first governors of this charity. His name is even written on the official document that created the organization. This document, called a royal charter, was given in October 1739.
Family Life
James Hamilton was married three times during his life. His first marriage was on February 14, 1723, which is St. Valentine's Day. He married Lady Anne Cochrane. She was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Dundonald. James and Anne had one child together:
- James (1724–1758), who later became the 6th Duke of Hamilton.
Sadly, Lady Anne passed away.
James then married Elizabeth Strangways. However, she did not have any children and passed away in November 1729.
On August 21, 1737, James married for the third time. His third wife was Anne Spencer. They had three children together:
- Lady Anne Hamilton (1738 – 1780). She later married Arthur Chichester, 1st Marquess of Donegall.
- Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton (1740 – 1819). He later became the 9th Duke of Hamilton.
- Lord Spencer Hamilton (1742 – 1791).
Later Life
James Hamilton passed away in 1743 when he was 40 years old. He died in Bath after experiencing health problems.
