Arthur Chichester, 1st Marquess of Donegall (born June 13, 1739 – died January 5, 1799) was an important nobleman and politician. He was known as Arthur Chichester until 1757. From 1757 to 1791, people called him The Earl of Donegall. He played a role in Irish politics.
Early Life and Learning
Arthur Chichester went to Trinity College, Oxford for his education. In 1757, he became the fifth Earl of Donegall. He inherited this title from his uncle.
His Time in Politics
In 1765, Lord Donegall joined the Irish House of Lords. This was like a parliament for noble people in Ireland. From 1768 to 1774, he also served in the British Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Malmesbury. An MP is someone elected to represent people in government.
To get his support for the government, he was given new titles. In 1790, he became Baron Fisherwick. This was a title in the British nobility. The next year, he received even more titles in the Irish nobility. He became Earl of Belfast and Marquess of Donegall.
His Family Life
Lord Donegall was married three times during his life.
His first marriage was on September 11, 1761. He married Lady Anne Hamilton. She was the daughter of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton. They had seven children together:

On October 24, 1788, he married Charlotte Moore. She was the daughter of Conway Spencer. Charlotte passed away in 1789.
In October 1790, he married for the third time. His third wife was Barbara Godfrey. She was the daughter of Reverend Dr. Luke Godfrey.
Lord Donegall had a country home at Butley Priory in Suffolk. He passed away in London at his home in St James's Square. He was 59 years old.
