The John Coleman House, also known as Grassdale, is a historic home in Eutaw, Alabama, United States. It was once part of a large farm, known as a plantation. This two-story house is made of wood and is built in a style called an I-house.
John Coleman moved from Edgefield, South Carolina, and settled on this land in 1819. He built the Grassdale house. By 1840, many people lived and worked on his property in Greene County, Alabama. Sadly, 75 of these people were enslaved, meaning they were forced to work without freedom.
Today, the John Coleman House is recognized for its special design. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1982. This list includes important historical places across the United States.
A cemetery is located near the house. Members of the Coleman family are buried there. Many of the enslaved people who lived and worked on the plantation are also buried in this cemetery. Currently, the house is used as a place for hunting trips.
