John Cornelius O'Callaghan (born 1805 – died 24 April 1883) was an important Irish historian and writer. He is best known for his book, History of the Irish Brigades in the Service of France. This book tells the story of Irish soldiers who fought for France.

Early Life and Education

John Cornelius O'Callaghan was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1805. His father was a lawyer in the city. His mother came from the southern part of Ireland.

John went to school at Clongowes Wood, which is a famous boarding school. Later, he also studied at another school in Blanchardstown.

Starting His Writing Career

O'Callaghan began his writing journey by contributing to magazines. He wrote for publications like the Comet and the Irish Monthly Magazine of Politics and Literature.

In these magazines, he met other important writers. One of his close friends was Richard Robert Madden. He also wrote alongside famous Irish leaders like Daniel O'Connell.

His Major Works

In 1840, John Cornelius O'Callaghan published his first book, called The Green Book. He was in London when it came out. Soon after, he returned to Dublin. There, he started writing for a new newspaper called The Nation. This newspaper was very important for Irish politics and culture.

The Irish Brigades History

In 1847, a group called the Irish Archaeological Society asked him to publish a book. This book was titled Macariae Excidium; The Destruction of Cyprus, or, a Secret History of the War of Revolution in Ireland.

After this, he spent many years working on his most famous book. It was called History of the Irish Brigades in the Service of France. This huge work covered the history of Irish soldiers. These soldiers fought for France from the time of King James II to King Louis XVI. The book was first published in 1867.
