Who Was John Cunningham?
John Cunningham was born into a very important Scottish family. His father was William Cunningham, 13th Earl of Glencairn. John was the younger son in the family.
Becoming an Earl
In 1790, a big change happened for John. His older brother, James, passed away. James had been a Representative Peer for Scotland, which meant he represented Scottish nobles in Parliament. Since James didn't have any children, John became the next Earl. He was then known as the 15th Earl of Glencairn.
From Soldier to Priest
Before he became an Earl, John Cunningham was a soldier. He served as an officer in a famous army group called the 14th Royal Dragoons. Dragoons were soldiers who rode horses.
After his time in the army, John decided to change his life completely. He joined the Church of England and became a priest. This was a very unusual change for someone from a noble family at that time!
Family and Legacy
In 1785, John Cunningham married Isabel. She was the daughter of Henry David Erskine, 10th Earl of Buchan. Isabel had been married before, but her first husband had passed away.
A Title's End
John and Isabel did not have any children together. When John died in 1796, the title of Earl of Glencairn had no one to pass to. This meant the title became "dormant." A dormant title is like a sleeping title; it means there are no direct heirs to claim it. So, the long history of the Earls of Glencairn ended with John.
Where He Rests
John Cunningham passed away at Coats House, which was a home just outside the city of Edinburgh. He was 47 years old. He is buried in the churchyard of St Cuthberts Church in Edinburgh. You can find his burial spot against the south-west wall of the churchyard.
