John Hew North Gustav Henry Hamilton-Dalrymple, 11th Earl of Stair (born June 12, 1848 – died December 2, 1914) was a British army officer and a nobleman. Before he became the Earl of Stair in 1903, he was known as Viscount Dalrymple from 1864.
Family Life of Lord Stair
John Hamilton-Dalrymple was the son of John Hamilton Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair and his wife, Louisa Jane Henrietta Emily de Franquetot.
He married Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie on April 10, 1878. She was the daughter of Sir James Grant-Suttie, 6th Bt. and Lady Susan Harriet Innes-Ker. Their marriage ended in 1905.
They had two children:
- Lady Beatrice Susan Dalrymple (died May 10, 1962) married Archibald Montgomerie, 16th Earl of Eglinton in 1905. They had children.
- John James Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair (born February 1, 1879 – died November 4, 1961)
What Was Lord Stair's Career?
Lord Stair was a captain in the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry, which was a type of cavalry unit. He was later promoted to major on March 4, 1902. Soon after, on August 2, 1902, he was given the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel.
In 1912, he became the President of the Cockburn Association. This was an important group in Scotland that worked to protect and preserve the environment and historic buildings. He held this position for about a year. His son, John, later became President of the same group in 1932.
When Did Lord Stair Pass Away?
Lord Stair died on December 2, 1914. He was 66 years old at the time of his death.
