John James Hamilton Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair (born February 1, 1879 – died November 4, 1961) was an important Scottish figure. He was a brave soldier and a politician. He was known as Viscount Dalrymple before he became the Earl of Stair in 1914.

A Life of Service: Soldier and Politician

John Dalrymple was the son of the 11th Earl of Stair. He joined the British Army in 1898. He became an officer in the Scots Guards.

Military Adventures

John Dalrymple fought in two major wars. His first war was the Second Boer War in South Africa. This war took place from 1899 to 1902. He helped capture important cities like Bloemfontein and Pretoria. He also fought in battles like Diamond Hill and Bergendal.

After the Boer War, he returned home in 1902. Later, he fought in the First World War, which started in 1914. During this war, he was captured by German forces. He was a prisoner until 1917. He was sent home because his eyesight was getting worse. For his bravery, he received the Distinguished Service Order award in 1919. He retired from the army that same year as a lieutenant colonel.

Life in Politics

Besides being a soldier, John Dalrymple was also a politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire. He held this position from 1906 to 1914.

In 1914, his father passed away. John then became the 12th Earl of Stair. This meant he joined the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament.

Lord Stair also held other important roles. He was the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1927 and 1928. This role connects the King or Queen to the Church of Scotland. From 1931 to 1932, he was the president of the Cockburn Association. This group works to protect historic buildings and places.
