John Dalrymple, 13th Earl of Stair facts for kids

John Aymer Dalrymple (born October 9, 1906, died February 26, 1996) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of the 13th Earl of Stair. From the time he was born until 1961, people knew him as Viscount Dalrymple. He was also honored with special awards like the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

He was the son of John Dalrymple, who was the 12th Earl of Stair, and Violet Evelyn Harford. John Aymer Dalrymple had a special job as the Lord-Lieutenant of Wigtownshire from 1961 to 1983. This role meant he was the Queen's representative in that area of Scotland. He also loved sports! He even competed in the four-man bobsleigh event at the 1928 Winter Olympics in 1928.

His Family Life

Lord Stair married the Queen's cousin, Davina Katherine Bowes-Lyon. They got married on January 14, 1960. Davina was the daughter of Sir David Bowes-Lyon and Rachel Pauline Clay. Davina was born on May 2, 1930, and passed away on November 1, 2017.

John and Davina had three children together. They also had ten grandchildren.

His Passing

Lord Stair passed away on February 26, 1996. He was 89 years old. After his death, his oldest son, John, took over his title.
