About the Earl of Stair
John Dalrymple is the oldest child of John Dalrymple, the 13th Earl of Stair. His mother was Davina Katherine Bowes-Lyon. She was born on May 2, 1930, and passed away on November 1, 2017. Davina was the daughter of David Bowes-Lyon. David was the brother of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
This means that Lord Stair's mother, Davina, was a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II. Because of this, Lord Stair is a second cousin to King Charles III. He is also a second cousin to The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, and The Duke of Edinburgh.
Through his mother's side, he is related to important families like the Bowes-Lyon, Astor, and Cavendish-Bentinck families. He went to Harrow School and then to RMA Sandhurst, a military academy. He served in the army with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. He was part of the Falklands War.
Through his father's mother, Violet Evelyn Dalrymple, he is a direct descendant of Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore. The Calvert family were the founders of the Province of Maryland in America.
Political Journey
When Lord Stair inherited his title in 1996, he became a member of the House of Lords. He sat as a crossbencher, meaning he was independent.
In 1999, a new law called the House of Lords Act 1999 changed things. This law removed the right for most hereditary peers to automatically sit in the House of Lords. However, 92 peers were allowed to stay. They were chosen by other peers through an election. Lord Stair was not elected at that time.
Later, in 2008, another peer named Davina Ingrams, 18th Baroness Darcy de Knayth passed away. This created an open spot in the House of Lords. Lord Stair was then elected by other peers to fill this spot. He has been a member of the House of Lords ever since. On October 13, 2011, he gave a speech during a debate about aviation.
Family Life
Lord Stair married Emily Mary Julia Stonor in 2006. Emily is the daughter of Ralph Stonor, 7th Baron Camoys and Elizabeth Mary Hyde Parker. Lord Stair and Emily have two children together.
