John Dent (born August 21, 1761 – died November 14, 1826) was an important English man who worked as a banker and a politician. He was known for his work in finance and for serving in the British Parliament.

John Dent was the oldest son of Robert Dent, who was also a banker in London. John followed in his father's footsteps and became a partner at a famous bank called Child's Bank.

John Dent's Political Career

John Dent was a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's government, making laws and decisions. He was a member of the Tory party, which was one of the main political groups at the time.

He represented the area of Lancaster in Parliament from 1790 to 1812. Later, he was elected again to Parliament for the area of Poole in 1818 and 1822.

"Dog Dent" and His Interests

John Dent was sometimes called "Dog Dent." This nickname came from his strong interest in a law called the Dog Tax Bill of 1796. This bill was about taxing dog owners.

Besides politics, John Dent loved collecting books. He was also a member of a special group called the Roxburghe Club, which was for people who enjoyed collecting and studying old books.

He was also recognized for his knowledge and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1811. This is a very old and respected group for scientists. He also became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, which is for people who study history and old objects.

John Dent passed away in 1826 at his home in the Mayfair area of London.

In 1800, John Dent married Anne Jane Williamson. She was from Roby Hall, near Liverpool. Together, they had a large family with five sons and five daughters.
