Biography

John Dethick was the son of John Dethick and Elizabeth Methwold. His family came from a place called West Newington in Norfolk.

He was a member of the Worshipful Company of Mercers. This was a very old and respected group of merchants in London. In 1656, John Dethick became the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very important job, like being the leader of the city.

On September 15, 1656, he was made a knight by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was known as the Lord Protector at that time. John Dethick passed away in 1671. He died at his home in the countryside, in a place called Tottenham in Middlesex. He was buried in a church in London called St Andrew Undershaft.

John Dethick was married three times during his life. His first wife was Ann. She was the daughter of Francis Smallpiece and the widow of Thomas Anguish.

His second wife was Martha. She was the daughter of Edmund Travers from London. John Dethick and Martha had three children together.

His third wife was Anne. She was the daughter of Thomas Jolliff from Staffordshire. John Dethick did not have any children who lived from his first or third marriages.
