Early Life and Education
John Douglas was the son of Charles William Sholto Douglas and Florence Timson. He went to two schools: Bryanston School and Canford School. These schools helped him prepare for his future roles.
Becoming an Earl
In 1976, John Douglas became the Earl of Morton. He inherited this title after his first cousin, the 20th Earl, passed away. An "earldom" is a very old noble title, like a duke or a baron.
Important Roles and Work
John Douglas had many different jobs and responsibilities. He worked as a property consultant, which means he gave advice about land and buildings. He was also a partner in Dalmahoy Farms. This shows he was involved in farming.
He was the chairman of the Edinburgh Polo Club. This club is for people who play polo, a sport played on horseback. He also worked as a director in Scotland for the Bristol & West Building Society.
In 1982, he was chosen to be a deputy lieutenant of West Lothian. A deputy lieutenant helps the Lord Lieutenant, who is the King's or Queen's representative in a county. Later, from 1985 to 2002, John Douglas himself served as the Lord Lieutenant of West Lothian. This was a very important role, representing the monarch in his area.

John Douglas married Mary Sheila Gibbs in 1949. They had three children together:
