John Douglas was a very skilled surgeon who lived a long time ago. He was known for a special type of surgery called lithotomy. This surgery helped people by removing painful stones from their bladder. He passed away on June 25, 1743.

John was one of seven sons. His father was William Douglas from Baads, near Edinburgh. His mother was Joan. John also had a famous brother, Dr. James Douglas, who was a doctor for the Queen!

For a while, John worked as a surgeon at the Westminster Infirmary, which was a hospital. In 1720, he became a member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists.

John Douglas wrote several medical books. In some of his writings, he discussed and shared his thoughts on the work of other doctors, like Chamberlain, Chapman, and Cheselden.

His important book about lithotomy, the surgery he specialized in, was translated into French in 1724. This helped his ideas reach more people in other countries.
