Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Douglas (born March 21, 1675 – died April 2, 1742) was a smart Scottish doctor and anatomist. He was a special physician to Queen Caroline. He helped us understand the human body much better.

Life and Discoveries

James Douglas was born in West Calder, West Lothian, Scotland, in 1675. He was one of seven sons. His brother, John Douglas, was also a well-known surgeon.

In 1694, James finished his first degree at the University of Edinburgh. Then, he studied medicine in France before moving to London in 1700.

He became a very respected doctor, especially for helping women during childbirth. Because of his great reputation, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1706. This is a special group for important scientists.

Douglas was one of the most respected experts on the human body in his time. He was also known for helping women give birth. In 1726, he was asked to look into a strange case. A woman named Mary Toft from England claimed she was giving birth to rabbits!

At first, Douglas was very doubtful. He thought it was as unlikely as a rabbit giving birth to a human baby. But he went to see Mary Toft anyway. After looking into it, Douglas discovered that she was tricking everyone. He bravely showed that she was a fraud.

James Douglas also taught medicine. He performed public dissections (studying bodies) at his home. He became a mentor and friend to another famous anatomist, William Hunter. They met in 1740 when Hunter came to London.

Hunter lived with Douglas and his family. He stayed there even after Douglas passed away in London on April 2, 1742. Douglas left behind his wife and two children.

Besides his medical work, Douglas wrote many books. These included grammars for English, French, Latin, and Greek. He also studied plants, especially a flower called the Guernsey Lily.
