Life of John Edmonstone

John Edmonstone was the oldest son of another nobleman, John Edmonstone of Boyne. He played a part in Scottish history by fighting in a famous battle.

The Battle of Otterburn

In 1388, John Edmonstone fought bravely at the Battle of Otterburn. This was a big fight where Scottish soldiers faced off against English forces. The Scottish army won a great victory that day! They defeated the English leaders, Henry Percy (also known as Hotspur) and his brother Ralph Percy. Many English nobles, including the Percy brothers, were captured during this battle.

Land and Marriage

John Edmonstone received the village of Ednam as a special gift. This gift was part of his wife's "dowry." A dowry was money, goods, or property that a bride's family gave to her husband when they got married.

Family and Children

John Edmonstone married a lady named Isabel. She was a very important person! Lady Isabel was the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland and Elizabeth Mure. She had also been married before to James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas.
