John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland (born May 5, 1728 – died April 25, 1774), was an important English nobleman and a member of the Parliament. Before 1771, people knew him as Lord Burghersh.
He was the oldest son of Thomas Fane, 8th Earl of Westmorland. John grew up at Wormsley Park in Buckinghamshire. He went to Westminster School from 1739 to 1745. His younger brother was Henry Fane, MP, who also became a Member of Parliament.
In 1762, John Fane followed in his father's footsteps and became a Member of Parliament for Lyme Regis. He held this position until 1771, when he passed the role to his brother Henry.
Becoming Lord Burghersh
In 1764, a famous artist named Joshua Reynolds painted a full-length picture of John Fane. The painting was called Lord Burghersh. Reynolds was paid 100 guineas for his work. The painting shows John Fane wearing blue clothes with gold designs. In the background, you can see the family's main home, Apethorpe Hall.
In 1771, John Fane inherited his father's titles and lands. He then took his place in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament.
His Family and Children
John Fane was married twice and had several children.
First Marriage
His first wife was Augusta Bertie. She was the daughter of Lord Montague Bertie. They got married on March 26, 1758. They had three children together:
- John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland (born June 1, 1759 – died December 15, 1841)
- Hon. Thomas Fane (born July 6, 1760 – died April 15, 1807). He married Anne Lowe in 1789 and had children.
- Lady Augusta Fane (born September 18, 1761 – died March 6, 1838). She married William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale.
Second Marriage
His second wife was Susan Gordon. She was the daughter of Cosmo George Gordon, 3rd Duke of Gordon. They married on May 28, 1767. They also had three children:
- Lady Susan Fane (born October 3, 1768 – died March 8, 1793). She married John Drummond in 1788.
- Lady Elizabeth Fane (born January 7, 1770 – died May 19, 1844). She married Sir John Lowther, 1st Baronet, of Swillington, who was the brother of William Lowther. They had children.
- Lady Mary Fane (born September 19, 1772 – died June 27, 1855). She married George Fludyer, MP in 1792 and had children.

After John Fane passed away, his widow Susan married Colonel John Woodford in 1778. They were married at St Marylebone Parish Church in London. Their children included Alexander George Woodford.
