John FitzRobert was an important English nobleman who lived a long time ago, from about 1190 to 1240. He is famous for being one of the "Surety Barons" who helped make the Magna Carta in 1215. The Magna Carta was a very important document that limited the power of the king. John FitzRobert was the son of Robert fitzRoger and Margaret Chesney.

John FitzRobert's Life and Role

John FitzRobert played a part in the history of England during a time of great change. In 1215, there was a conflict called the First Barons' War. This war was between King John of England and a group of powerful barons. John FitzRobert joined the barons who were fighting against the king.

Even though he was fighting against the king, John FitzRobert also held important positions. For example, he was the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk from 1215 to 1216. A sheriff was a royal officer who managed the law and order in a county.

After the barons lost a big battle at Lincoln in May 1217, John FitzRobert decided to support the new king. This new king was Henry III of England, who was still very young. John FitzRobert then served as the sheriff of Northumberland from 1224 to 1227.

Family and Descendants

Around 1218, John FitzRobert married Ada de Balliol. Ada was the daughter of Hugh de Balliol and Cecily de Fontaines.

John and Ada had several children. Their son, Roger FitzJohn, later married Isabel de Dunbar. Isabel was the daughter of Patrick II, Earl of Dunbar. Their daughter, Cecily FitzJohn, also married into the Dunbar family, marrying Patrick III, Earl of Dunbar.

John FitzRobert also had another son named Hugh de Eure. The later Lords Eure are descended from Hugh. Another son, Robert FitzJohn de Stokkes, might have been the Sheriff of London at one point.
