John Fitzalan, the 6th Earl of Arundel and 3rd Baron Maltravers, was an important English nobleman who lived from 1385 to 1421. He came from a powerful family and inherited important titles during his lifetime.
Becoming a Nobleman
John Fitzalan was born on August 1, 1385. His father was John Fitzalan, 2nd Baron Arundel. When his father passed away in 1390, John became the 3rd Baron Arundel. Later, in 1405, he also became Baron Maltravers after his grandmother died. These titles meant he was a very important person in England.
John Fitzalan also served his country. He was part of the English fleet, which means he helped protect the coast of France from the sea.
Claiming the Earldom of Arundel
In 1415, a relative named Thomas Fitzalan, 5th Earl of Arundel died. This made John Fitzalan the closest male relative to inherit the title of Earl of Arundel. The Earldom of Arundel was a very old and important title that usually passed down to male heirs.
The next year, John Fitzalan was called to Parliament as the Earl of Arundel. However, there was a disagreement about who should get the family's land and money. The sisters of the previous earl also wanted a share. This argument was not settled during John Fitzalan's lifetime. Because of this, he was later called to Parliament as Baron Maltravers, not as the Earl of Arundel.
Family Life
John Fitzalan married Eleanor Berkeley, who was the daughter of Sir John Berkeley. Eleanor lived until 1455. After John Fitzalan died, she married two more times.
John and Eleanor had two sons:
- John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel: He eventually succeeded in becoming the Earl of Arundel, settling the family's claim to the title.
- William Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel: He also became an Earl later on. He married Joan Neville, who was the daughter of a very important nobleman, Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury.
