John Fleming (1567–1619) was an important Scottish nobleman and diplomat. He was known as the 6th or 7th Lord Fleming.

John was the son of John Fleming, 5th Lord Fleming and Elizabeth Ross. His family, the Clan Fleming, lived at Boghall Castle near Biggar. John was believed to be a Catholic.

John Fleming's Role as a Diplomat

In October 1590, King James VI of Scotland chose John, Lord Fleming, to be an ambassador. An ambassador is like a special messenger or representative from one country to another. John traveled to London first, then went to meet with King Christian IV of Denmark and other important leaders like Duke Johann VII of Mecklenburg and Duke Henry Julius of Brunswick-Lüneburg. His job was to represent Scotland and build good relationships.

Becoming the Earl of Wigtown

In 1606, John Fleming received a special honor. He was given the title of Earl of Wigtown. This meant he became an even more important nobleman in Scotland. He passed away in 1619.

Family Life and Children

John Fleming married Lilias Graham in 1586. She was the daughter of John Graham, 3rd Earl of Montrose. They had several children, including:

  • John Fleming, 2nd Earl of Wigtown (1589-1650). He was born at Kincardine Castle in December 1589. Important people like the Duke of Lennox and the Earl of Bothwell attended his christening.
  • Anna Fleming (died 1625). She married twice. First, she married William Livingstone of Darnchester. After he passed away, she married John Seton of Barns.
