John Fryer (physician, died 1672) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Fryer was an English doctor who lived a long time ago. He was born into a family of doctors. Because of his Catholic faith, he faced challenges joining the main group of doctors in London, called the College of Physicians. In 1665, he even tried to help start a new group called the "College of Chemical Physicians."

John Fryer's Life as a Doctor

John Fryer came from a family of doctors. His grandfather, also named John Fryer, and his father, Thomas Fryer, were both important members of the College of Physicians.

John studied medicine in Italy, at a place called Padua. He earned his doctor's degree there on April 6, 1610. After his studies, he returned to London and lived in a place called Little Britain.

Challenges with the College of Physicians

On June 25, 1612, John Fryer became a "candidate" for the College of Physicians. This meant he was hoping to become a full member. However, John was a Catholic, and at that time, being Catholic could cause problems for people in certain professions.

On March 29, 1626, the College of Physicians told government officials that John was a "suspected papist" (a term for a Catholic). This was likely why he was not made a full member for many years. His brother, Thomas Fryer, also faced similar issues.

After more than 50 years as a candidate, John Fryer was finally recognized. In December 1664, when the College created a new title called "honorary fellows," he was placed at the very top of the list. This was a special way to honor his long career.

Later Life and Passing

John Fryer passed away at his home in Little Britain on November 12, 1672. He was 96 years old. He was buried on November 19 in the vault of St. Botolph's Church in London. His mother and eldest sister were also buried there.
