The John Fuller House is a very old and special home located at 463 Halladay Avenue in Suffield, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1824. For many years, from 1887 to 1952, this house was the main building for Suffield's "town farm." This farm was a place where the town helped people who needed support. The house is a great example of Georgian architecture, even though that style was not very popular when it was built. Because of its history and unique design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The John Fuller House

What Does It Look Like?

The John Fuller House stands in a quiet, country part of northern Suffield. It is made of brick and has two and a half stories. The roof slopes down on the sides, facing away from the street.

The main door is on the side of the house that faces the street. It is set back into the wall and has a rounded top. Above the door, there is a special fan-shaped window called a fanlight. You can see another fanlight window in the middle of the roof's peak.

Inside, the house has two rooms at the front. A staircase goes up on the right side. Behind these rooms, there is one large space. This used to be two separate rooms, but a wall was removed to make it bigger. At the very back, there is a narrow room that runs across the whole house. This room was likely used for storage. The second floor has a similar layout to the first. Many original parts of the house, like the wooden details and plaster walls, are still there.

A Home with a History

The John Fuller House was built in 1824 by a man named George Fuller. His family owned the house until 1887. That year, the town of Suffield bought the house and the land around it.

The town bought it to create a "town farm." This farm was a place where people who needed help could live and be cared for. The town had been spending money since 1868 to help people in need. Buying the farm was a way to save money in the long run.

However, fewer people used the town farm starting in the 1920s. It became more expensive to run. So, in 1952, the town sold the property back to private owners.
