John Gould Veitch facts for kids
John Gould Veitch (born April 1839 – died 13 August 1870) was a famous British plant expert and traveler. He was one of the first plant explorers from the Victorian era to visit Japan. His family owned a well-known plant business called Veitch Nurseries. John also traveled to the Philippines, Australia, Fiji, and other islands in Polynesia to find new plants. He wanted to bring these plants back to Great Britain.
Discovering New Plants
John Gould Veitch brought back many popular plants that people grew in greenhouses during his time. These included plants like Acalyphas, Cordylines, Codiaeums (also known as Crotons), and Dracaenas. From Fiji, he found a new type of palm tree. This palm was later named Veitchia joannis in his honor. Many other plants have also been named after the Veitch family because of their important work.
Meeting Robert Fortune
While in Japan, John met another famous plant collector named Robert Fortune. They were both looking for new plants, and their collections even returned to England on the same ship! Each man claimed to have discovered a type of cypress tree called Chamaecyparis pisifera.
Family Life and Early Death
After returning to England in 1866, John Gould Veitch married Jane Hodge. They had two sons: James Herbert Veitch (born 1868 – died 1907) and John Gould Veitch, Jr. (born 1869 – died 1914). Sadly, John Gould Veitch passed away at the age of 31 from a serious illness.
