John Graham, Earl of Menteith facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Graham, Earl of Menteith (died February 28, 1347) was an important Scottish nobleman. He became the Earl of Menteith because of his marriage to Mary Menteith. She was the Countess in her own right, meaning she inherited the title from her father, Alan Menteith.

A Brave Scottish Knight

John Graham was the son of John de Graham and Marjory Halliday. He was a loyal supporter of King David II, the King of Scotland.

In 1346, John Graham joined King David II when Scotland invaded England. They fought in a big battle called the battle of Neville's Cross.

The Battle of Neville's Cross

During the battle, the English archers were getting ready to shoot their arrows. John Graham bravely told the King to send horsemen to attack the archers from the side. He believed this would stop them.

He said, Give me but a hundred horse and I engage to disperse them all; so shall we be able to fight more securely. His advice was not followed.

Graham's Courageous Attack

Even though his advice was ignored, John Graham did not give up. He quickly jumped on his horse. With only his own soldiers following him, he bravely charged towards the English archers.

His horse was killed during this attack. He tried his best to stop the enemy's advance. But without more support, he had to go back to the main Scottish army.

After a tough battle that lasted for three hours, John Graham was captured. King David II was also taken prisoner. John Graham was then sent to the Tower of London as a prisoner.

Punishment for Treason

The English King, Edward III, gave direct orders for John Graham to be put on trial. He was accused of being a traitor. This was because he had once promised loyalty to the English King.

John Graham was found guilty. He received a very severe punishment for treason.

Family Life
