Learning and Family Life
Sir John went to Rugby School when he was younger. Later, he studied at Trinity Hall at Cambridge University.
In 1967, he married Valerie Susan North. They had three children: a daughter named Lucy, and two sons, Rupert and Peter. Valerie passed away in 2014.
His Work and Career
Sir John had a long and interesting career. He started by working for the government in other countries as part of the Diplomatic Service. This meant he helped represent Britain around the world.
He also worked in the Cabinet Office, which is a main government office in the UK. Here, he helped create the National Heritage Memorial Fund. This fund helps protect important historical places and items in the UK.
Later, he became a very important leader in the government's energy department. From 1991 to 1992, he was the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Energy. This was a top role, helping to guide the country's energy plans. After that, he led British Nuclear Fuels Ltd as its Chairman from 1992 to 1993. This company dealt with nuclear energy.
Special Awards and Honours
Sir John received special awards for his work. In 1985, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. This is an honour given by the King or Queen for excellent service.
In 1999, he was made a Knight Bachelor. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name.
Love for History and Art
Sir John had a deep interest in history and art. He was a trustee for the Royal Collection Trust. This means he helped look after the amazing art and treasures owned by the Royal Family. He was also a governor of Compton Verney, which is a famous art gallery.
He loved and knew a lot about portraits, especially historical paintings of people from Britain. He was part of a committee that helped develop the National Portrait Gallery. From 1989 to 1994, he also helped the National Trust look after special places in the East Anglia region.
For many years, Sir John lived in a beautiful old Tudor palace called East Barsham Manor in Norfolk. He sold the manor after his wife passed away.
