The John H. Goodwin House is a special old building in Greenville County, South Carolina, near Travelers Rest, South Carolina. It's also known as the Blythe-Goodwin-Hagood House. This historic place includes a two-story farmhouse and a small store building. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means they are important to the history of the United States.

The Historic House

The main house was built in different steps over many years.

How the House Was Built

The very first part of the house was a log cabin built around 1790 by Robert Cooke. Later, around 1840, a two-story section was added. This new part included a front entrance hall. At the same time, a separate kitchen with a stone chimney was built behind the house. Over the years, more changes were made. For example, a porch on one side was turned into a new room, and the kitchen was connected to the main house.

A Stop for Travelers

From about 1840 to 1899, the John H. Goodwin House was a busy stop for people traveling. It was like a rest stop halfway between Greenville and Asheville, North Carolina. Travelers could stop here to rest before continuing their journey.

The Old Store Building

In front of the house is a one-story store.

What the Store Looked Like

This store was built around 1870 by John H. Goodwin. It was made in the Greek Revival style, which means it looked a bit like ancient Greek temples with its simple, classic design. The building had a gabled roof and was covered with weatherboard siding. It stood on open piers, which are like small pillars.

What the Store Was Used For

This store was very important to the community. It served as both a post office, where people could send and receive mail, and a trading post, where people could buy and sell goods.

Keeping History Alive

People have worked hard to protect and restore this historic property.

Efforts to Save the Buildings

In 2005, a group called the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway Association bought 11 acres of land, which included the house and the store. They created a special agreement called a conservation easement. This helps protect the property from new buildings being built on it.

Restoring the Store and House

The association worked to restore the store building. In 2011, they opened the Highway 11 Welcome Center inside the restored store. They have also made repairs to the roof and foundation of the main house. The group plans to do more restoration work on the house in the future, even though the visitor center has not yet opened and the house restoration is not finished.
