Early Life and Family Connections
John Hamilton was the son of Sir James Hamilton, 1st Baronet. His mother was Margaret Hamilton. The Hamilton family was very well-known in Scotland. Their family line was connected to James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton. This means John Hamilton was related to the powerful Dukes of Hamilton.
Becoming a Nobleman
Around 1645, John Hamilton took over his father's title as a Baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family.
Then, in 1647, he received an even higher title. He was made a Lord in the Peerage of Scotland. This meant he became Lord Belhaven and Stenton. This important title was given to him by the King.
Role in Scottish History
In 1648, Lord Belhaven and Stenton joined the Scottish army. This army went to England to try and help King Charles I. However, their mission was not successful.
He was part of the Battle of Preston. Luckily, he managed to escape safely from the battle.
Passing on the Title
Later in his life, in 1675, Lord Belhaven and Stenton made a special arrangement. He gave his lordship back to the King. The King then gave it back to him with a new rule for who would inherit it.
This new rule meant that his title would pass to his relative, John Hamilton of Pressmannan. This John Hamilton was married to Lord Belhaven's granddaughter, Margaret.
Marriage and Death
Lord Belhaven and Stenton married Margaret. She was the daughter of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton.
He passed away in June 1679. He did not have any sons who survived him. Because of this, his baronet title ended. However, his lordship, Lord Belhaven and Stenton, continued. It was passed on to John Hamilton of Pressmannan, just as he had arranged.
