John Hamilton, 4th Earl of Haddington (born 1626, died August 31, 1669) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Haddington, which was a high rank in Scotland.
About John Hamilton
John Hamilton was born in 1626. He was the second son of Thomas Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Haddington. His mother was Lady Catherine Erskine. Her father was John Erskine, Earl of Mar.
John became the Earl of Haddington in 1645. He was still quite young at the time. He took over the title after his older brother, Thomas, passed away.
His Role in Parliament
Because of a physical condition, John Hamilton did not join the military. Instead, he was very dedicated to his work in the Scottish Parliament. He regularly attended meetings and played an active part.
In 1651, he attended the coronation of King Charles II. This important event took place at Scone Abbey. Later, during a challenging political time, he had to pay a fine. This was part of a rule set by Oliver Cromwell.
John Hamilton passed away on August 31, 1669. He died at Tyninghame House in East Lothian, Scotland.
His Family Life
In 1648, John Hamilton married Lady Christian Lindsay. She was the daughter of John Lindsay, 17th Earl of Crawford. Her father was also the Lord Treasurer of Scotland.
