John Hanson Farquhar was an important American politician. He was born on December 20, 1818, and passed away on October 1, 1873. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Indiana. This means he was elected to speak for the people of Indiana in the U.S. government.

John Farquhar's Early Life

John Hanson Farquhar was born in Union Bridge, Maryland. He went to public schools there. In 1833, he moved to Indiana with his family. They settled in a town called Richmond. He worked as an assistant engineer on the White River Canal until 1840. After that, he decided to study law.

His Political and Military Career

After studying law, John Farquhar became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Brookville, Indiana. He also worked in the state government. He was the Secretary of the State senate in 1842 and 1843. Then, in 1844, he became the chief clerk of the State house of representatives. In 1852, he tried to get elected to the Thirty-third Congress, but he did not win.

During the American Civil War, John Farquhar served in the military. He was a captain in the Nineteenth Infantry of the Regular Army. Later, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress. He served from March 4, 1865, to March 3, 1867. He chose not to run for re-election in 1866. In 1870, he moved to Indianapolis and started working in banking. He was also appointed Secretary of State by Governor Conrad Baker.

His Passing

John Hanson Farquhar passed away in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 1, 1873. He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
