John Hart Jr. (1848–1881) was an important person in South Australia. He was a member of the South Australian parliament for a short time, from 1880 to 1881. He was also a leader in sports clubs.
John Hart Jr. was born in 1848. He was the third of seven children. His father was Captain John Hart, who was a very important leader. Captain Hart was the premier (like a state leader) of South Australia three times between 1865 and 1871. John Hart Jr. also worked in his family's business, J. Hart & Co., which his father started.

Sports and Community Involvement
John Hart Jr. loved sports and was involved in many community groups.
Leading the Port Adelaide Football Club
In 1870, John Hart Jr. became the very first president of the Port Adelaide Football Club. This is a famous Australian rules football team. The club's first home ground was a place called "Buck's Flat." This area was part of his father's property, Glanville Hall Estate. Many early football matches were played there. The club's first secretary, William Leicester, was also the manager of Hart's Mill.
Other Club Activities
Besides football, John Hart Jr. was also the president of the Port Adelaide Rifle Club. He was a well-known member of the Adelaide Hunt Club. He even served as the Master of Fox Hounds for this club in 1873 and 1876.
Political Career
In 1880, John Hart Jr. was chosen to be a member of parliament. He was elected to represent the area of Port Adelaide in the House of Assembly. This is where laws are made for South Australia. Sadly, he passed away the next year, on August 15, 1881, before his time in parliament was over. He died at a place called Wooton Lea in Glen Osmond.
Family Life
In 1877, John Hart Jr. married Emily Lavinia Finch. They got married on August 8, 1877. Emily lived a long life and passed away in 1939. They had two children:
- John Heriot Hart (born 1880, died 1929) became a talented musician.
- Marian Henthorn Hart (born 1881, died 1942).
